Nella Hunkins is a very experienced cello teacher and orchestral
and chamber musician who is based in Gloucestershire.
Originally from New York, Nella Hunkins comes
from a family of
professional musicians. She studied with Leonard Rose and Janos
Starker, and received a Fulbright Scholarship to study at the
Paris Conservatory with Andre Navarra.

She began her orchestral career as associate principal cellist with the Cleveland Orchestra. Her later playing experience includes performances, recordings, and tours with the Berlin Philharmonic, and eight years as principal cellist with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, as well as membership of various chamber music groups.

Her extensive teaching experience includes faculty positions at the
Cleveland Institute of Music, the Berlin Hochschule, and the new music conservatory of the National University of Singapore. She has also been
a performance coach for the Jeunesse Musicale International Youth
Orchestra, in Verbier (Switzerland) and in Manila.

In her private teaching she has always taken particular pleasure in
working with promising younger students, from pre-teens to older

She welcomes enquiries from enthusiastic new students at all levels from
beginner to advanced; the only essential initial requirement is a genuine
wish to learn and improve!

See a much-praised performance of Barber's Adagio for Strings by cello students from the music conservatory of the National University of Singapore. Four of the six students studied with Nella, and she also arranged the piece for cello choir and acted as performance coach.
